THE PRACTICAL GUIDES

Sauna and a swim in Melbourne: choose the right centre ticket

At an aquatic centre, the cheapest pool ticket may cover swimming while leaving the sauna behind a different access band. Start with the facilities you intend to use, then check the ticket, age rules, pool timetable and current maintenance notices.

We checked two operating-centre offers and a relevant closure notice on official pages on 18 October 2026. These are shared aquatic facilities. For dedicated venues, browse our communal sauna and bathhouse directory; for an exclusive room, start with private sessions.

Buy access to the whole visit

Write down whether you want a lap swim, a warm-water pool, a sauna or steam room, or a particular combination. Check that every intended participant can enter each area. A venue can welcome children to its swimming pools while reserving the thermal area for older visitors.

Then check when those facilities can actually be used. Centre opening hours do not establish lap-lane availability, an empty sauna or unrestricted access to a programmed pool.

Northcote · a separate combined ticket

NARC: choose the swim, spa, sauna and steam option

The current Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre pricing page lists ordinary adult swimming at A$8.60. Its combined swim, spa, sauna and steam ticket is A$14.90 off-peak or A$17.90 peak. Peak is Monday–Friday, 5–8pm; other times are off-peak. The thermal ticket is marked 18+.

The entry conditions require casual users to obtain the relevant access band at reception and use a towel when seated. An after-entry upgrade is listed separately; ask staff how it applies to your visit rather than assuming it avoids the peak combined rate. See the Northcote profile.

Bentleigh East · wellness includes the pools

GESAC: compare aquatic wellness with swim-only entry

Glen Eira's casual price schedule lists GESAC aquatic wellness at A$16.90 for an adult or A$13.50 concession. Its access explanation confirms that casual wellness includes the pools, spa, steam room, traditional sauna and infrared sauna. Swim-only entry is a different product.

The pool information places the usual wellness-zone age threshold at 16, with limited stated exceptions. Check any individual access need directly. Pool programmes can restrict public warm-water access, and the infrared cabins are shared with limited capacity. See the Bentleigh East profile.

Keilor Downs · dated maintenance check

Brimbank: the sauna is currently unavailable

At the 18 October check, Brimbank's sauna update and 16 October site alert say the sauna remains closed. The alert schedules wet-area maintenance on 26 October, other affected areas returning on 27 October and the sauna expected on 28 October.

Treat that as a published plan and check for a reopening confirmation before travelling for the sauna. This closure is also recorded on the Brimbank profile. An aquatic membership's general facilities list does not establish today's availability.

Two adults after work: put the time into the total

For two adults without concessions, the published NARC combined rate gives A$35.80 during weekday 5–8pm peak, compared with A$29.80 off-peak. Two GESAC adult wellness entries total A$33.80. These are arithmetic illustrations from the reviewed public schedules, excluding travel, parking, equipment hire and optional services.

Choose around the complete visit. If you want a lap swim first, check the lane schedule for the period you can attend. If your group includes a 16- or 17-year-old, the centres' published thermal-access rules differ. If you need a private setting, these shared-area ticket comparisons do not establish one.

Five checks before leaving for the centre

  1. Read the live alerts: confirm the actual sauna, steam room and pool you want, including any maintenance or restricted hours.
  2. Name the ticket at reception: ask what the charge covers for each person and collect the correct band. Confirm concessions and any required proof.
  3. Check the swimming slot: allow for lane bookings and programmed use of warm-water areas, alongside the time you have for changing.
  4. Pack for both activities: ask about swimwear, towels, footwear, lockers and accessibility equipment. Confirm which items are supplied and which cost extra.
  5. Follow the venue's participation rules: read the current entry conditions and ask the operator about individual requirements. Discuss health concerns with an appropriate clinician.

This is a facilities-and-booking comparison. It does not prescribe a temperature, heat exposure time or treatment routine. For other venue types, continue to the session-price checklist and private-versus-shared guide.
